The Matching-hood of the Flanneling Pants

3:06 PM

I've always loved the idea of families having matching Christmas pajamas. After Thanksgiving, I started searching online for cute, affordable Christmas pajamas that could be found in sizes that fit both Stephen and me, as well as little Lydia. The problem is...apparently they don't exist! I found some that were cute, but not affordable, and some that were affordable, but not cute... so it seemed that my dreams of a cute little matching family on Christmas Eve were dashed. :(

BUT THEN, I had the thought that maybe, with the coaching and help of someone FAR FAR more talented than I, I could make some. It just so happens that my mother-in-law is an EXCELLENT seamstress (you will probably die when you see the unbelievably cute blessing dress she made for Lydia -- post coming soon!), and it just so happened that we were going to be visiting my in-laws this Christmas! It was fate! My matching Christmassy-pajamas dream was going to become a reality after all!

The problem with dreams, is that they often take a little (or a lot!) more work than expected in achieving. This particular dream no exception. After trips to two different Joann's locations to find fabric with no avail, I was ready to throw in the towel. But thankfully, my sweet mother-in-law is not as easily swayed as I - and with one final attempt and a journey to the cutest little Amish town 30 miles away - we found a plaid-patterned flannel that was more perfect than anything I could have imagined.

As though we hadn't faced enough obstacles already...then came the actual making of the pants part. ha! I don't think Mom Olson fully understood how sewing incompetent I really am, haha, but she was so patient and helpful and I absolutely could not have done any of it without her! Every time she would explain what I needed to do, I would repeat it back like three times just to make sure I understood EXACTLY what needed to happen, and then would begin the painfully slow process of actually performing the task. I'm sure it was exhausting for her to watch! But she didn't complain :) In fact, she even offered to do ALL of the horrible parts, namely: cutting, pinning, ironing; and she let me do the only fun part: sewing! (Which I more than happily agreed to.) After I made Stephen's pair, she whipped up another pair for me in what seemed like 10 minutes flat, and then we both worked on parts of Lydia's (ADORABLE) pair. THANK YOU MOM OLSON! You carried my dream on your back and I couldn't have done it without you!!!!

han.

PS I'm beginning to see now that every time I take on a sewing project with a mentor-sewer they seem to end up with 85% of the workload hahaha (namely: the dress I "made" for personal progress, the t-shirt quilt, and now these pajamas...) WOOPS. I guess I should probably stop taking on sewing projects. ha
