THE DOWNTOWN COUNTDOWN [THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH NEW YEARS']

9:57 PM

Yesterday Stephen and I went on a little "date" to downtown Iowa City. Mom Olson graciously offered to watch Lydia for a little while so we could get out of the house (having family around who is willing to watch your baby = 😱🤗😊🙏🏼) and we decided to take her up on it.

We drove around a few of the downtown streets that Stephen explained are usually overrun with students from the University. Due to winter break being in full swing, it was pretty deserted. We parked in a garage that advertised free parking for the first hour. Naturally, we were without a wallet or cash of any kind, so I set a 40 minute countdown on my phone to alert us when we needed to head back to the car.

The sun was out, and my phone said it was windy but the temperature was 37 degrees, which for a winter in Iowa is actually quite warm!

IT. WASN'T.

It was freezing!

I swear the wind chill (which my phone confirmed was blowing at 30-40mph!) was in the single digits. By the time we got out of the parking garage our hands were already numb! I'd lugged along my real camera with the hope of getting some pictures, but we hadn't thought to bring gloves, and because my camera is so bulky, I couldn't put my hands in my pockets. Stephen was a saint to take a few pictures despite the cold (maybe because there were pokémon out for him to catch..), but after a particularly strong and icy gust of wind, we decided to take a selfie from my phone and call it a day (or "date"? ha).

When we got back to the car, I looked at my timer which was now counting-down from 30:15.

9 minutes 45 seconds was all we had lasted. 😂😂😂

Not able to come up with anything else to do we headed back home! I think we were out of the house for a total of about 25 minutes. Clearly, we need to get more creative with things we can do on dates that don't cost money. Suggestions are welcomed!
